What Is BDA Installation?

A BDA (bi-directional amplifier) is a signal boosting system that ensures first responders can communicate reliably inside your building during an emergency. When concrete walls, metal structures, and modern energy-efficient glass block radio signals from reaching interior spaces, a BDA system amplifies those signals so Houston Fire Department (HFD) and Houston Police Department (HPD) radios work on every floor, in every stairwell, and in every corner of the building.

BDA installation is the process of designing, building, and commissioning a complete in-building public safety radio enhancement system. This includes the amplifier unit, donor antenna (roof-mounted to receive outside signals), a network of interior coverage antennas, coaxial cabling, battery backup, and all programming and testing required to meet code.

Who Needs a BDA System?

Under IFC Section 510 and the Houston Fire Code, a BDA system is required in buildings where emergency responder radio signals fall below minimum coverage thresholds. This commonly includes:

• New commercial construction — most buildings over 50,000 sq ft or 3+ stories must pass an RF signal test before receiving a certificate of occupancy
• Existing buildings undergoing renovation — major renovations can trigger a new signal assessment and require BDA installation if coverage is deficient
• High-rises and hospitals — steel-frame buildings, underground parking structures, and buildings with heavy concrete or low-E glass are almost always deficient
• Buildings that failed ERRCS testing — if a grid test shows signal levels below the required -95 dBm threshold, a BDA system is the standard remediation

• Site survey and RF assessment — we walk the entire building with calibrated test equipment to map signal coverage and identify dead zones on all required HFD and HPD frequencies
• System design — based on the RF assessment, we design a custom antenna layout, select the right amplifier, and calculate cable runs to ensure coverage meets or exceeds code at every grid point
• Permitting and coordination — we handle the City of Houston fire alarm permit, FCC Part 90 documentation, and AHJ coordination so you don't have to
• Physical installation — our GROL-licensed technicians mount the BDA unit, install the donor antenna, run coaxial cable to all coverage antennas, and connect battery backup systems
• Programming and commissioning — the amplifier is programmed for all required public safety frequencies, gain levels are set, and the system is brought online
• Acceptance testing — we perform a full NFPA 1225 grid test to verify compliant signal levels throughout the building and produce a signed test report for the AHJ
